Back to School: Setting SMART Goals for 2025

Most students return back to school on the 15th of January 2025.

This marks the beginning of a year filled with new opportunities, challenges and goals. As you embark on this new academic journey, it is important to set SMART goals. Without goals for this year, what will you strive towards, and how will you measure your success?

What Are SMART Goals?

Goals describe what we want to achieve, and they provide direction for our actions. SMART goals are a specific type of goal-setting method that helps individuals and organisations set realistic and achievable targets. The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Specific

A good goal should be clear and well-defined. This means it should answer the question: Who? What? When? Where? Why?

Example of a vague goal: “I want to improve my English grades this year.”
Example of a specific goal: “I will improve my overall GPA by at least 0.5 points by completing all English assignments on time and attending all classes.”

The second example is more specific as it outlines the actions and specific targets.

Measurable

What does it mean when something is measurable? It means that it can be quantified or tracked.

A measurable goal should have specific criteria for measuring progress and determining when the goal has been achieved.

Example of a non-measurable goal: “I want to be more physically fit by the end of this year.”
Example of a measurable goal: “I will complete a 5k run in under 30 minutes by the end of this year.”

The second example is measurable as it has a specific target and can be tracked through time and distance.

Attainable

An attainable goal is one that is challenging but still within reach. It should require effort and stretch your abilities, but not be impossible to achieve.

Setting unattainable goals can lead to disappointment and demotivation.

Example of an unattainable goal: “I will become a reading expert in 2 weeks.”
Example of an attainable goal: “I will read for 30 minutes every day and complete one book per month to improve my reading skills over the next 6 months.”

The second example is more realistic and achievable within a reasonable timeframe.

Relevant

A relevant goal should align with your overall values, interests, and other goals. It should also be relevant to your current situation or needs.

Setting irrelevant goals can lead to wasted time and effort on something that ultimately does not matter to you.

Example of an irrelevant goal: “I will learn new things during my tutoring sessions.”
Example of a relevant goal: “I will learn Afrikaans during my tutoring sessions to help me communicate with my Afrikaans-speaking friends.”

The second example is relevant to the individual’s needs and interests.

Time-bound

A time-bound goal should have a specific timeframe for completion. This creates a sense of urgency and helps to prioritise actions towards achieving the goal.

Setting open-ended goals can lead to procrastination and a lack of motivation.

Example of an open-ended goal: “I will learn a new language someday.”
Example of a time-bound goal: “I will enrol in a beginner Zulu class and be able to hold a basic conversation in Zulu within 6 months.”

The second example has a specific timeframe, making it more likely to be achieved.

Time-bound and realistic goals force us to prioritise what’s most important. This helps us avoid getting distracted by less important tasks or goals.

5. Success

SMART goals have a higher chance of being achieved as they are broken down into specific and attainable steps. This leads to a sense of accomplishment and boosts our self-confidence.

Example Of A Back To School SMART Goal

To better understand the concept of SMART goals, let’s look at an example in the context of going back to school.

  • Specific: I want to improve my grades this semester.
  • Measurable: I will aim for a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • Attainable: I will attend all classes and complete all assignments on time. I will also seek help from my professors or private tutors if needed.
  • Relevant: Improving my grades is important for my academic and future career success.
  • Time-bound: I will achieve this goal by the end of the current semester.

By setting this SMART goal, I have a clear plan in place to achieve my desired outcome. This includes specific actions that I will take and a defined timeline for completion. With this structure, I am more likely to stay focused, hold myself accountable, and ultimately succeed in reaching my goal.

Remember that SMART goals can be applied to any area of our lives, not just academics or career-related goals.

Now that you understand the components of a SMART goal, here are a few tips to keep in mind when setting them:

  • Start with the end in mind.
  • Be specific and concrete.
  • Break down bigger goals into smaller ones
  • Stay realistic.
