You might be wondering why we are talking about university applications before your child has even started their Matric year. The short answer is provisional acceptance.

Because South African universities close their application windows around the middle of your child’s Grade 12 year, admissions offices do not have final Matric results to review. Instead, they rely heavily on final Grade 11 marks to grant conditional offers.

Understanding the university application process means realising that Grade 11 is effectively your child’s most crucial academic year. Strong marks right now will open doors that might otherwise slam shut before final Matric exams even begin.

The South African University Application Timeline

While exact dates shift slightly, you can generally expect the core university application timeline to follow this schedule during your child’s Matric year:

April: Applications Open

This is when the rush begins. Major institutions like the University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (UP), and the University of Cape Town (UCT) typically open their online application portals early in April.

June to July: Early Closures

Highly competitive programmes such as medicine, engineering, and architecture often close applications as early as June. UCT generally closes all of its undergraduate applications by the 31st of July.

August to September: General Closures

The University of South Africa (UNISA) usually opens its applications around August. Meanwhile, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) typically closes general applications at the end of September.

October: Late Applications

A few late applications might still be accepted by select universities or programmes, but relying on them is risky. By October, most universities are simply finalising their intake.

Some universities offer free online applications to encourage digital submissions. For example, applying online at the University of Johannesburg is entirely free, though submitting a manual application will cost you R200.

Other institutions charge a mandatory, non-refundable administrative fee to process the paperwork. For South African citizens, the University of Cape Town, Wits University, and Stellenbosch University typically charge an application fee of R100. The University of Pretoria generally requires a R300 application fee.
